Rigid Verbena, Sandpaper Verbena or Tuberous Vervain (Verbena rigida)
Verbena rigida has bright violet flowers 6-18" high and spreads through underground runners. It loves full sun, heat, and any soil with decent drainage, so it's great for slopes or hillsides. tolerates frost and is hardy to 15 degrees F. Has a rambling, informal appearance, so is not good for a formal garden appearance, but looks lovely in "natural" garden settings. Can become invasive with too much water or perfect soil. Good choice for a low water or water wise garden and is drought tolerant once established, although sometimes it takes a while (up to a year) to really establish itself. Then it can really take off, so be patient. It will also be happy with moderate or regular water. It will adapt to dry, stony soil, so it's nice color for tough, hot, dry spaces. Please remember that not all sizes are available at any given time.
1 Gallon size is $10, occasionally available in 4" or flats. Please call or email to check on availability and price.
