Limonium (Statice, Sea Lavender, Marsh-rosemary)
Limonium (Statice, Sea Lavender, Marsh-rosemary)
Old-fashioned annual statice is often found as a dried specimen in a crafts store, but is usually a perennial in Southern California gardens. An easy-to-grow plant that is nice for containers or a border, it attracts birds and is great for cut flowers or for dried flowers. The foliage is usually under 12 inches in height, with lovely 18 inch flower spikes rising above the plant for an airy appearance, for a total size of 1-3 foot high and about 1 foot wide. Grow statice in Full Sun to part shade. Very, very tough, it is Drought Tolerant, takes high heat, will survive light frost, and will grow in just about any soil, although it prefers well-drained soil. If you have clay soil, either plant on slight slope or in containers, or be careful of overwatering.
Mostly grown in the dark purple shade, it also flowers in wide variety of other colors and shades, including: blue, Orange, Pink, Red, White, Yellow, and lavender. Heavy flowering in Spring, Summer and Fall; will flower all year in Southern California and will reseed lightly, so it’s not invasive. Foliage ranges from green to gold. Limonium is a genus of 120 flower species and is in the plumbago or leadwort family.
