Russelia equisetiformis (Firecracker Plant, Coral Plant, Coralblow, Fountain Plant)
Russelia equisetiformis (Coral Fountain) is a multiple branching, evergreen plant with 4-5 foot arching stems with bright green, needle-like leaves. Growth begins upright, but arches and bends in a mounded shape with bright red, almost orange, tubular flowers mostly in Spring and Summer, although blooms pop up year around.
Flower buds will drop off if it is too cold, although the plant is hardy to around 25° F and can re-sprout from the base after a freeze. Overall height is 4-5 feet by 4-5 feet wide.
Best to plant in full sun , but can tolerate even deep shade, although flowering is best in full to half-day sun.
This tough plant will tolerate wind, high heat, and a variety of soils with medium drainage. It requires only medium water, but does need it to be regular, so near your lawn or sprinkler area might be a good idea.
Great for a large pot or spilling over a wall, it can also be trained up a trellis and is an excellent plant for butterflies and hummingbirds. This species is grows naturally from Mexico south to Guatemala. There is also a paler, pink form called ‘Flamingo Park’ that may be special ordered if available.
Free delivery in Orange County only. We do not ship plants outside Southern California due to weather, shipping service handling, and cost considerations.
