Salvia (sage) 'Wendy’s Wish'
Salvia (sage) Wendy’s Wish is a Hardy perennial that is very easy to grow, drought tolerant and excellent for a variety of spots in the garden or patio. Prefers Full sun or part shade in well-drained soil. Grows 3-4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. Attracts bees and butterflies. Aromatic foliage. Hardy to -5 degrees. S. 'Wendy's Wish' flowers from May to October (warmer months), with large, tubular vibrant magenta flowers. Green foliage is dense with dark maroon stems.
Drought tolerant once established, but water regularly when first planted. Will do well if planted near lawns. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Deadhead (remove spent flowers) to encourage more blooms. Cut back by one-third and apply a slow release fertilizer in very early spring.
Bright, hot pink or red flowers attract hummingbirds from late spring til fall. Good for borders, beds, or containers, but prefers good drainage, so plant on a hillside if you have clay soil. Slugs may attack young foliage.
There are more than 900 species of salvia, originating in the rocky soils of Mexico. Wendy's Wish is a new variety, originally a seedling discovered in Australia, possibly a cross between buchananii and chiapensis.
