Bulbine - Frutescens (Yellow) or Tiny Tangerine
Bulbine Frutescens and Bulbine Tiny Tangerine are very similar plants that are very much at home in your water-wise garden!
Bulbines are a wonderful drought-tolerant plant that live happily alongside succulents or next to more water-loving plants. This green succulent is happy either way and doesn’t really look like a succulent with it’s tall spikes of flowers almost all year round. It is evergreen and grows in full or part sun and handles temperatures down to 20 degrees before it shows damage to the leaves. Bulbine stays neat and tidy, with clumps of green spiky leaves about 1 foot tall for the Tiny Tangerine version and about 18” tall for the Yellow frutescens version. The flower stalks rise 18 inches-2 feet above the plant in either case, with either small yellow flowers at the ends or combination yellow/tangerine for the Tiny Tangerine hybrid. The plant will spread slowly by sending clumps out to the side as off-shoots, so it is a great plant to share with friends. Great accent plant or for borders, rock gardens or containers. Especially good for poor soil areas and in walkways where it can be viewed closeup.
